FAQ about Skate Sharpening, Blade Guards and Accessories

Correct skate blade sharpening and the right accessories such as blade guards are crucial for safety, stability and performance on the ice. Besides standard guards, there are models for ice hockey, figure skating and leisure that simplify transport/storage and keep edges sharp for longer.

Blade guards: Protect the blades when walking off the ice and prevent edges from becoming dull or damaged. Available as soft rubber guards, hard plastic guards with locking mechanism or premium padded versions. Always choose the correct length so the guard fits tightly.

Sharpening: Proper sharpening provides grip, edge control and stability. Most players do best with a standard 12 hollow, offering a balanced mix of speed and grip.

New skates are usually not game-ready sharpened. At Hockeyzentrale and Hockeyoffice a professional first sharpening costs €9.95–15 – book here.

How can I tell if my skates are sharpened?

Sharpened blades have sharp, even edges. Unsharpened blades slide sideways and feel unstable.

Which hollow is right for me?

Most skaters choose 12. Deeper = more grip. Flatter = more speed.

How often should skates be sharpened?

About every 15–20 hours on ice. More often for pros.

How much does sharpening cost?

Which blade guards are best?

Are new skates sharpened?

No. Professional sharpening is strongly recommended.

Which replacement runners fit?

Bauer and CCM offer quick‑release systems. Length (mm) is engraved on the runner.

Should skates fit tight or loose?

Snug without pressure points. Loose skates reduce power transfer and increase risk.

How to break in new skates?

Short sessions, knee bends, edge work and gliding make the boot more flexible.
